Playing for the Ice Dogs

The Sydney Ice Dogs (formally Western Sydney Ice Dogs) is an Australian semi-professional ice hockey team from Sydney, New South Wales. Formed in 2002, the Ice Dogs are a member of the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL). The Ice Dogs are two time Goodall Cup champions. Each year we recruit 4-5 import players from Europe and North America.

Our Mission is “To showcase the game of Ice Hockey in order to attract new people to our unique sport, but more importantly retain the youth of our game by providing a pinnacle they can aspire to and strive for"

Where will I be based?

The Ice Dogs are based in Sydney NSW (The Harbour City) and our games are played at the Macquarie Ice Rink.

Moving to Australia or moving to Sydney has been a big dream for a lot of people around the world. Sydney is a hotspot for international students, working holidayers, and tourists. And Sydney is such a beautiful city that mostly people fall in love and end of moving to Sydney permanently.

When do we play?

The AIHL season starts in April and runs through to September. Games are scheduled for Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Often, double-header weekends are scheduled.

Import players typically arrive in March/April, at the season start, although some flexibility may be offered to the right candidates.

What are the expectations?

Players are expected to work hard and conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. This includes:

  • Availability for all home and away games (including interstate travel)

  • Attendance at all off ice training and gym sessions
  • Active participation in the training of junior and development players
  • Coaching of local players to bring about skills transfer

Will I be paid?

The Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) is an amateur league. As such, no Australian team may pay its players.  Nevertheless, we will help you to find local work within the conditions of your visa, if you are an import.

For all players, the Ice Dogs will, where ever possible, cover the costs of registrations, interstate game travel and accommodation, meals, ice time and equipment.

What about local players?

The Sydney Ice Dogs are always interested to hear from talented local Australian or Kiwi players interested in playing at an elite level. Local players are supported by covering the costs of ice time, uniforms, travel and accommodation, meals, parking etc. All candidates must be a member of the AIHL or their respective national leagues.
